Undergraduate Majors in Curriculum and Instruction

The Department of Curriculum & Instruction offers three majors for undergraduate students interested in teaching at the pre-college level: Elementary & Early Childhood Education (EECE), Secondary Education (SECED), and World Languages Education (WL ED). Our graduates typically qualify for Instructional I teaching certificates in:

  • Early Childhood Education
  • Elementary Education
  • English/Communication
  • Languages: French, German, Latin, Russian, or Spanish
  • Mathematics
  • Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Space Science, Environmental Education, General Science, or Physics
  • Social Studies

Elementary & Early Childhood Education (EECE)

The EECE program helps students develop into educators and professionals who will care for and connect with their future students. EECE is designed to support teacher candidates' understanding of teaching and learning from preschool through eighth grade. Teacher candidates in EECE choose from one of three options:

Pre-Kindergarten through Fourth Grade (PK-4)

Middle Level English (Grades 4-8)

Middle Level Social Studies (Grades 4-8)

Middle Level Mathematics (Grades 4-8)

Secondary Education (SECED)

The SECED major is designed to help students prepare to become middle- and high-school teachers. It also helps support their understanding of teaching and student learning in grades 7-12. Teacher candidates in SECED choose from one of four teaching options:

Mathematics Education

Science Education:

Students must choose one specific subject:

Social Studies Education

World Languages Education (WL ED)

The WL ED major prepares students for teaching in all grades from Pre-K through 12. WL ED students typically complete general education courses and courses in their language of specialization during their first two years in university and complete a semester abroad experience during their third year. Teacher candidates in WL ED choose from one of five language specializations:
