2010 Award Winner - Smethport Area School District
Each year through the Building Community through Rural Education Award, CREC and the Pennsylvania Association of Rural and Small Schools (PARSS) recognize a rural school or district that has distinguished itself through innovative practices contributing to the educational experiences for the students served, while collaborating with the broader community for the benefit of all.
On Friday, April 30, 2010 CREC, in partnership with PARSS, awarded its sixth annual Building Community through Rural Education award at the PARSS Annual Meeting in State College.
This year the award goes to the Smethport Area School District for their educational initiatives exploring local history using interactive web technology to create to explores and document local history and historical transformations of the Smethport area through constructivist, collaborative and place-based education. Their Planet Smethport initiative is a true homegrown model for linking education and community.
Two other school districts received Honorable Mention awards in recognition of their school-community initiatives.
We recognize Ridgway Area School District for its community partnership efforts with a local arts collective, Appalachian Arts, to extend the arts education offered through Ridgway, and to promote local art and artisans.
We also recognize the Chambersburg Area School District for their workforce development and energy conservation initiatives. a model in energy conservation and community outreach. Their energy conservation program has reduced costs by nearly $1 million in the last 30 months and reduced the district’s carbon footprint by 6,233 metric tons. The district has also made energy conservation software programs available on their website for the broader community’s use.
