Dr. Thomson's research and outreach interests focus on a) discussions of food and agricultural issues among those who both produce and consume the food in addition to those who communicate about such issues and b) distance education, particularly the barriers and opportunities which distance education faces within higher education. In addition, Dr. Thomson maintains a continuing academic interest in the Cooperative Extension System, including the external and internal forces shaping its future.

Dr. Thomson also serves as professor-in-charge of the graduate programs in the Department of Education as well as the professor-in-charge of the minor in agricultural communications open to undergraduate majors in the College of Agricultural Sciences. She has served as editor of the Journal of Extension and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Journal of Extension, which is the Journal's policy making arm.
