Congratulations Students (Sept. 2008)

An article acknowledging College of Education students for their accomplishments

Marlee DeLuca

The Mathematics Education Trust (MET) of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has named Marlee DeLuca, secondary education mathematics major, winner of the 2008–09 Prospective Secondary Teacher Course Work Scholarship. The $10,000 scholarship, supported by the Texas Instruments Demana-Waits Fund, provides funding for tuition, books, and other academic expenses.

MET awarded the Demana-Waits Scholarship to two full-time university students who are rising juniors preparing to become certified teachers of secondary school mathematics. DeLuca earned the scholarship on the basis of her excellent academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and volunteer community projects, which demonstrate the leadership needed by future mathematics teachers.

Rebecca Albitz

An article written by Rebecca (Becky) Albitz, doctoral candidate in Higher Education, has been named one of the twenty best articles on library instruction published in 2007, according to the American Library Association's Library Instruction Round Table. The article, titled "The What and Who of Information Literacy and Critical Thinking in Higher Education," compares and contrasts information literacy and critical thinking. It appeared in portal: Libraries and the Academy, 7:1 (2007), pp. 97–109.

In addition, Albitz has authored a new book, Licensing and Managing Electronic Resources, published in June 2008 by Chandos Press. Albitz, the electronic resource and copyright librarian at Penn State, wrote the book as a resource to acclimate electronic resource librarians to the variety of responsibilities associated with the position.
