Professional Development Associate (PDAs)

There are two types of PDAs, methods PDAs and classroom PDAs. Methods PDAs teach methods courses and lead methods course planning teams while classroom PDAs work with mentors and interns in individual classrooms. Some PDAs serve dual roles as both methods and classroom PDAs.

Classroom PDAs

The role of the classroom-based professional development associate is to provide support for the professional development of the interns and the mentor teachers during the school year. PDAs visit their school sites weekly, conducting observations of interns, spending time with mentors, interns, and children, and serving as a resource for all members of the Professional Development School Community.

The general responsibilities include:

  • Helping interns actualize the objectives and goals of CI 495B/A and student teaching
  • Responding to and assessing intern journals
  • Conducting intern observations
  • Publicizing professional development opportunities
  • Meeting with mentors and interns to review interns' progress
  • Facilitating inquiry work
  • Planning and conducting seminars
  • Helping to facilitate mentor, intern, and PDA professional development

Methods PDAs

The role of methods PDAs is to provide support for interns and mentor teachers in the teaching of science, social studies, classroom learning environments, and math as well as the integration of technology into these areas, and to work with interns to actualize the goals of required coursework (MTHED 420, SCIED 458, SS ED 430W, EDLDR 405) within the rich context of spending everyday with children in a school setting.

The general responsibilities include:

  • Developing specialized course syllabi for each methods course through collaboration with methods course planning teams
  • Teaching seminars
  • Working with interns to set goals and collect evidence to indicate attainment of course objectives
  • Providing on-going assessment and feedback to interns regarding their emerging understanding of the subject areas
  • Visiting classrooms to observe interns' teaching
  • Helping with inquiry projects in related subject area
  • Coordinating intern exchanges and observations when needed
  • Meeting with mentors to discuss methods course requirements

PDS Principal

The role of the PDS Principal is to facilitate the continued growth of the PDS as a community of learners. School as a community of learners is described by Barth (1990) as a place where "students and adults alike are engaged as active learners in matters of special importance to them and where everyone is thereby encouraging everyone else's learning" (p. 9).

The general responsibilities include:

  • Observing interns at various times throughout year
  • Facilitating school/university communication
  • Providing leadership to PDS initiatives
  • Facilitating mentor and intern teachers' professional development opportunities throughout the year
  • Implementing seminars for interns on administrative topics (i.e., interviewing, resume)
  • Meeting monthly with PDS Director/Co-Directors to discuss ongoing issues and concerns

PDS Director/Co-Directors

The general responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating activities and meeting periodically with Central Office Administrators
  • Facilitating the development of mentor teachers through inquiry work
  • Teaching graduate courses
  • Visiting and observing in classrooms throughout the year as requested
  • Coordinating efforts of PDAs, mentor teachers, interns, and principal.
  • Coordinating with OPTE and C & I
  • Conducting research to document the work of the internship
  • Providing reports to university for NCATE documentation
  • Seeking additional sources of support
  • Maintaining records of each intern and coordination of intern record keeping with OPTE
  • Evaluating progress and impact of the PDS.
