Early Childhood Education (ECE), as a multidisciplinary area within Curriculum & Instruction, embraces the challenges of complexity, diversity, and multiple perspectives, and it has an inclusive, multicultural emphasis. ECE is devoted to educating persons for careers in basic and higher education in areas of research, scholarship, policy, and practice. The core knowledge includes child growth and development, environment; curriculum, and content planning and implementation; instruction and communication; assessment; professionalism and leadership; and families, communities, and cultures. Diversity education includes working with minorities within the United States as well as internationally because many graduate students come from abroad, necessitating situating ECE in a global context.
