Seeking: Doctoral Assistant for Teaching Elementary Social Studies Education

Are you interested in supporting aspiring elementary teachers as they learn different approaches to teaching social studies?


Penn State University’s Department of Curriculum & Instruction is seeking a fulltime Ph.D. student for a graduate assistantship focused on elementary social studies teacher education. Professional duties can include teaching Penn State’s social studies methods courses, supervision of new elementary social studies teacher-candidates in classroom placements, and participating in creative and scholarly research projects.

This is an opportunity to join our growing academic community of faculty, graduate students, and classroom teachers in a range of residential and web-based educational courses, including seminars on elementary education and social studies topics.

Desired Qualifications:
 

  • At least 2 full years of classroom teaching experience, preferably including K-5 grade level
  • Prior academic courses in one or more social studies subjects (history, sociology, etc.)
  • Flexibility to travel to different schools in central Pennsylvania


What This Assistantship Offers You:
 

  • Waiver of tuition for fulltime Ph.D. coursework
  • Living stipend (approximately $20,000/year) plus health insurance benefits
  • Guaranteed to degree completion (4 years), with satisfactory academic progress

Seeking: Doctoral Research Assistant for Educational Outreach to Teachers

Do you have a passion for teacher professional development (PD)?

Are you interested in researching teachers’ uses of professional development and inquiry?

The Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Education Initiative at Penn State University, a collaboration between the Colleges of Education and Communications with the Pennsylvania Department of Education, is seeking a fulltime Ph.D. student for a unique graduate assistantship.

The Initiative designs and offers professional development and resources for Pennsylvania teachers to support teaching about the Holocaust, genocide, and human rights. We seek a graduate assistant to help create and implement professional development, train partnering teachers in inquiry, and conduct research on teacher educational practices and uses of inquiry.

Desired Qualifications:

 

  • At least 3 years of K-12 classroom teaching experience (ideally including the teaching of difficult subjects such as the Holocaust, genocide, or human rights abuses)
  • Prior background in conducting PD experiences for teachers
  • Familiarity with teacher inquiry and inquiry approaches to teaching
  • Availability to travel to different school areas in Pennsylvania

  • Guaranteed for two years, with excellent prospects for renewal beyond
