There is now a new icon in the menu bar of every macOS device that will display the Penn State Shield. This application is called NoMAD and was deployed to enhance a macOS device’s ability to interact with the College's Active Directory. Listed below we will highlight the new features of this application:

  • Kerberos Tickets – One of the big issues with macOS devices and Active Directory is their inability to renew Kerberos tickets when reconnecting to the College network or Penn State wireless. Usually a user will need to clear all of their Kerberos tickets by opening Ticket Viewer (Which can only be opened from Keychain Access) and deleting any old expired tickets. Once this is completed a user is then prompted for their Active Directory password which upon entering allows them to print. With NoMAD as soon as the system is able to contact the college’s directory services which the user will see when the icon displays blue, the Kerberos ticket will be automatically renewed. Tickets are automatically renewed every sixty minutes or can be renewed by clicking the NoMAD menu bar application and selecting Click Here for Printing Issues.
  • Updating your Active Directory Password – NoMAD has the ability to update a user’s Active Directory Password which will also update the user’s keychain on the system it is performed on automatically. NoMAD has the ability to let the user know by clicking the menu bar item how many days are left till their password expires as shown below.

It will also perform alerting at 14 days by displaying in red COE Password Expiring Soon. There will also be notifications from the notification center with the icon displayed with this article.

These reminders will continue until the user changes their password which can be done through the application. When completed through the application by selecting Update College of Education Password, the user will interactively be able to see that the requirements are met via the green circle icons on the right side of each of the password boxes. If a user would like to view the requirements they can click the “?" button.

  • Lock Screen – Allows the user to lock their screen immediately. Useful if leaving the macOS device unattended.
  • Managed Software Center – Yet another shortcut to Managed Software Center which provides all of the college’s automatically configured and installable software for macOS.
  • Contact CETC – Easy link the College of Education Help Desk where you can submit a ticket if you are having issues with your College of Education Mac.

If you see Sign In grayed out, Update College of Education Password grayed out, or the menu bar Penn State shield is gray, then you are not currently connected to the College’s Directory Services and will need to connect to VPN or connect via Ethernet or PSU Wi-Fi.
