#1 Residence Life Graduate Assistant

The Department of Residence Life is committed to the development of a safe and inclusive living- learning community which fosters academic, social, cultural, and personal growth. The educational priority is the guiding principle for our residents’ development during their tenure in the residence halls. Residence Life uses this educational priority to guide the staff when planning and implementing educational initiatives to all residents.

A successful candidate for this position must possess and demonstrate strong communication and human relations skills in addition to effective administrative, supervision, time management, and problem solving skills. He/she should also possess a thorough understanding of the role and purpose of residence hall living as it applies to student development and a commitment to fostering diversity in the residence community

Responsibilities

The Graduate Assistant position reports to the Beaver Hall Coordinator. The position requires approximately 25 hours/week, which includes some evening and weekend hours. The primary responsibilities of the assistantship are outlined below.

  • Co-supervision of 8 Resident Assistants
  • Staff selection, training, and development
  • Student counseling
  • Conflict Resolution and Mediation
  • Crisis Management and On-call Duty Response
  • Adjudicating discipline hearings
  • Organizational Advising
  • Social Justice Training
  • Facilitating community-building programs
  • Advising/Overseeing Special Living Options
  • Holding regularly scheduled office hours
  • Meeting weekly with assistantship supervisor
  • Attending weekly staff meetings
  • Other duties as assigned

The person who assumes this role is also invited to participate in departmental/divisional professional development opportunities.

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop an understanding of the co-curricular role of Residence Life and various other functional areas within Student Affairs
  • Enhance communication, facilitation, teamwork and leadership skills
  • Increase awareness and appreciation of social justice issues and integrate social justice issues in Residence Life-related functions
  • Demonstrate active listening skills, empathy, integrity, and compassion in interactions with others
  • Learn how to work as a professional member of a Student Affairs team

Qualifications

  • Enrolled full-time in a related graduate program. Priority will be given to students in the College Student Affairs Program
  • Must be a self-starter and able to work with a wide variety of students
  • Demonstrate ability to handle multiple tasks and responsibilities
  • Possess effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Interest in and enthusiasm for intentionally designing co-curricular experiences with and for students
  • Must be able to positively and creatively contribute to the work of the office
  • Interest in and ability to learn about individuals different than oneself and ability to learn about ideas and beliefs different than one's own.
