Jennifer Fliss: "After several years of working in both banking and strategic planning and always being designated as the informal department trainer, a life-changing event - becoming a single mother prompted me to really re-evaluate the direction my life was headed. The birth of my son motivated me to fully utilize my skills as an instructor and shift my career focus from business to a rewarding career in Education, allowing me to pursue my true love (teaching) while maintaining a schedule that was conducive to caring for my young son. I chose Penn State World Campus’ Master of Education in Adult Education program because I see the importance of literacy and education in all of our lives - from the toddler years through adulthood - and I feel passionate about ensuring we create literacy-rich environments that provide the foundation for life-long learning of students of all ages.

I earned both my undergraduate degree (Marketing) and my MBA (Strategic Planning/Organizational Behavior) from Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh. Ultimately my goal is to combine what I learn in Penn State’s program with my existing degrees and “real life” experiences in the corporate training environment and parlay that into a rewarding teaching career geared towards improving the lives adult learners and their families."

Sue Kenney is a Family Intervention Specialist with the Bellevue School District in Bellevue, Washington. She discovered the Certificate in Family Literacy Program when researching classes to take as part of her M.Ed. studies through Penn State's World Campus. A longtime community volunteer and parent advocate, Sue became excited about the opportunity to expand her knowledge of early childhood literacy and adult literacy issues, in particular. "The scope of the courses covered in the certificate program offer the study of a variety of topics that early childhood educators and parents need to know to ensure the academic and lifelong successes of their students. I am a better educator, parent, and community member because of the knowledge I have gained".

Judy MacLean is a librarian in Fredericton, NB, Canada. She holds a Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies from Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS. She enrolled in the graduate Certificate in Family Literacy program from Penn State University to research the role of libraries in promoting literacy through family literacy initiatives. Although her children are now teenagers, she still enjoys moments spent reading to them.
