Adding Images to Your Site

Where do you get images?

  • The College has a gallery of images taken at College of Education events and in classrooms. You are welcome to review this gallery of images and select images for use on your site. The images are available on the College Flickr site Images taken by Strategic Communications also are available for our use. Those images can be found on the Penn State News Flickr site.
  • You can also use your own images. Photo sizes will vary, but some guidelines follow:
    • Web-quality images are 72 ppi (pixels per inch). If you want the downloadable version of your image to be usable in print publications, the uploaded image must be 150 ppi for newspaper or 300 ppi for magazine.
    • Head-and-shoulder (portrait) images should be at least 3 inches by 4 inches.
    • In general, photos should be no larger than 5 MB in size.
    • Photos must be of good quality – proper exposure (not too dark or too light), and in sharp focus. Photos in which the main subject is out of focus will not be used.
  • If you would like to schedule a photo shoot at a class or event within your program, please contact the College Relations Office at edrelations@psu.edu at least two weeks prior to the event.

Existing Images on the Site

A number of images are already in place on the site.

  • Headshots
    • Log into the College website. Photos taken for the online directory can be found in folders inside the main images folder at https://www.ed.psu.edu/images/ online. Faculty and staff headshots uploaded in 2014 or earlier can be found inside alphabetized headshots folders. Images uploaded in 2015 can be found in the folder named “2015 faculty and staff portraits.”
    • Other Images
      • Departments and other units should have an images folder at the top of their subsections. Check that folder to see what images are already there that can be used on the site.

    • the URL (web address) for the folder on your site where you want to house the image.
    • A text title of the image that will be used as the alternative description of the image for accessibility purposes.
