America Reads

America Reads at Penn State is looking for students to serve in schools, child-care centers, museums and other community nonprofit organizations. The America Reads (AR) program provides support to teachers, caregivers, parents, and librarians to enhance children’s language development, reading, and love of learning. Moreover, America Reads provides students with a variety of community service opportunities that enrich life-long learning for local families – giving back to the communities that host Penn State campuses. America Reads not only gives college students an opportunity for part-time employment, but it also provides them with a rich service learning experience.

America Reads is part of the Federal Work-Study (FWS) program.  The overall goal of FWS is to provide part-time employment to help students in need finance the costs of postsecondary education.  Since 1997, America Reads has been placing FWS students in schools, childcare centers, museums and other community non-profit organizations in the effort of supporting the literacy development of community children, adults and families while providing them with a rich service learning experience.
