Fall 2013

 

July 15

For those students scheduled to take their comprehensive exam September 16-20, 2013, a draft copy of your thesis proposal must be given to your adviser by this date or you will be dropped from the schedule of exams.   You will not receive your comprehensive questions until you have given a draft copy of your thesis proposal to your adviser.

July 22
Comprehensive Exam Questions.
Distribution of comprehensive exam questions to students that are completing their comprehensive exam September 16-20, 2013.  Students have six weeks to answer these questions.   Answers to the questions, along with the final draft thesis proposal, need to be submitted to your adviser at least three weeks prior to your scheduled exam date.  However, please check with your adviser as to when they would like your answers to the questions and final draft thesis proposal, as some advisers would like them sooner than the three week deadline.   After adviser approval, answers to the questions, along with the final thesis proposal must be submitted to all committee members no later than two weeks before scheduled exam.

August 12-September 9

August 26
Final Draft Thesis Submission.
Deadline for submission to adviser of final draft of thesis or research paper for approval and answers to comprehensive questions for students taking oral comprehensive exam.   Oral Comprehensive exams are scheduled for September 16-20, 2013.

September 3
Thesis Distribution.
Distribution to committee members of adviser-approved thesis and answers to comprehensive questions for students scheduled for oral comprehensive exams. Comprehensive Exams are scheduled for September 16-20, 2013.  Failure to meet this deadline results in cancellation of examination.

September 9
Full, Final and Adviser-Approved Thesis Submission.
Distribution to committee members of adviser-approved full, final thesis for students taking final oral exam.   Final Oral Exams are scheduled September 23-25, 2013.  Failure to meet this deadline results in cancellation of examination.

September 16-September 20
Comprehensive Examination.
Oral portion of doctoral comprehensive examination administered by doctoral committee. Presentation of thesis proposal required.  Scheduled previous semester or earlier by program office. No more than 3 exams per day. Requires registration at Penn State during current semester.


September 23-September 25
Final Oral Examination.
Final oral doctoral examination administered.  Scheduled previous semester or earlier by program office. No more than 3 exams per day. Administered only to students who have filed intention to graduate during current semester.  Requires registration at Penn State during current semester.

October 3
Last day for Fall graduate to submit final copy of their master's paper to their adviser for Fall 2013 graduation.

October 8
Last day for Fall 2013 graduate to pass final oral defense (see Graduate School calendar on Graduate School website)


October 11
Examination Scheduling for Spring 2014.
Deadline for approval of scheduling of comprehensive examinations and final oral examinations by doctoral committees. Program office schedules examinations.  A checklist signed by both student and adviser must be submitted to staff assistant in order to schedule exams for Spring 2014.   The form can be found in the WF ED booklet.   You can also contact Rachel for the form.  Examinations are not scheduled by program office without approvals.


November 4
Final Draft Thesis Submission.
Deadline for submission to adviser of final draft of thesis or research paper for approval.  Failure to meet this deadline is evidence of lack of academic progress.

November 11
Full, Final and Adviser-Approved Thesis Submission.
Distribution to committee members and to the WF ED program office of adviser-approved full, final thesis for students taking final oral comp exam.   Final Oral Comp Exams are scheduled November 25-27, 2013.  Failure to meet this deadline results in cancellation of examination.

December 2-4
Final Oral Examination.
Final oral examination administered.  Scheduled previous semester or earlier by program office. No more than 2 exams per day.  Requires registration at Penn State during current semester.


December 16
Draft copy of precis due to student's adviser.  Failure to meet this deadline will result in the student being dropped from taking comprehensive exam for Spring 2014.

December 16

Written Candidacy Exam - 314 Keller, beginning promptly at 8:30 a.m.
Written portion of doctoral candidacy examination administered by administrative assistant.
Required during second semester during which doctoral students are enrolled. Requires registration for graduate credit at Penn State during current semester.

January 29 & 30
Oral Candidacy Examination
Oral portion of doctoral candidacy examination administered by graduate faculty.
Students admitted to candidacy for a doctoral degree must meet subsequent deadlines for doctoral committee formation and for program of study approval.

January 31
Full, Final and Adviser-Approved Thesis Submission.
Distribution to committee members of adviser-approved full, final thesis for students taking final oral exam.   Final Oral Exams are scheduled February 17-19, 2014.  Failure to meet this deadline results in cancellation of examination.

February 10-14
Comprehensive Examination.

Doctoral Committee Appointment.
Deadline for requesting in writing from professor–in–charge appointment of doctoral committee by Dean of the Graduate School.
Failure to meet this deadline is evidence of lack of academic progress.

March 31

Deadline for student filing of approvals of doctoral programs of study by committees of students admitted to candidacy during current semester. Filed with program office.  Failure to meet this deadline is evidence of lack of academic progress.
