Javier Perez
Javier F. C. Pérez is a 2nd year Doctoral Student in the College of Education’s Counselor Education and Supervision Program. Through his work with students, and as the Co-Chair of the Counseling Honor Society’s Professional Development Committee, Javier provides encouragement, and motivation to his peers traveling along the journey toward becoming future educators.

Mr. Pérez’s research interests include learning and instruction in Counselor Education with an emphasis on building clinical judgment and competence in the classroom, social justice and race-based instruction in counselor training, and the use of creative writing in counseling and counselor education. As he works to sharpen his own skills as a future counselor educator, Mr. Pérez has demonstrated compassion and enthusiasm over the success of his peers. His passion for counseling and counselor education is evident in his interactions with others and in his approaches to teaching.

In his down time, Mr. Pérez enjoys creative writing, painting, and cooking, including his work to transform classic Puerto Rican cuisine to vegetarian-friendly dishes. Those around him benefit from his paintings and food, which he often carries out for others and uses to refuel his own wellness.  Mr. Pérez hopes that his work as a student and future counselor educator will encourage others to remember that they, and what they do, matter.

The source of Mr. Pérez’s motivation to educate, and support others stems from his mother’s compassion and dedication to others, and her strong work ethic.   He also credits his drive, courage, and motivation to continue his work as a future Counselor Education Faculty member to the patience and support of Dr. Richard Hazler, and his counselor education cohort.

Javier F. C. Pérez hopes to teach future Counselor Educators to “help and hold others in a very important way.” As a future faculty of color, Javier hopes to contribute to the work around social justice and multiculturalism, a drive more recently ignited by the tutelage of Dr. Julia Bryan.

Mr. Javier F. C. Perez’s favorite quotes:

“The final mystery is oneself.  When one has weighed the sun in the balance, and measured the steps of the moon, and mapped out the seven heavens star by star, there still remains oneself.  Who can calculate the orbit of his own soul?”

                                                                                                                                       – Oscar Wilde

“We should concern ourselves not so much with the pursuit of happiness, but the happiness of the pursuit.”
