UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.—The College of Education will hold the eighth annual Cycle-Thon and 5k Fun Run/Walk from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on October 5, at Chambers Building on the University Park campus. Bikers, runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in this annual fall event.

Proceeds from Cycle-Thon and the 5k Fun Run/Walk benefit the College’s Summer College Opportunity Program in Education (SCOPE), a program in the College that brings high school students from multicultural backgrounds to Penn State to participate in a four-week academic intensive program. SCOPE’s mission is to help promote the increase, the recruitment, participation and success rates of underrepresented students in higher education and more specifically in the education field.

Phil Hoy, assistant director of alumni relations and the event coordinator, said that he estimates that Cycle-Thon and 5k Fun Run/Walk will have about 200 participants.

“People interested in participating can register for the event on the College of Education’s webpage (,” said Hoy. “Registration prices are $25 for adults/non-students, $20 for students, $15 for K-12 students, and children under five are free.”

Two runners at Cyclethon 5K raceHoy said that the event will also feature fun for the whole family.

“In addition to the run and bike ride, there will be games and activities, face painting, as well as awards and prizes,” said Hoy.

Participants are invited to stay after the event and have lunch. Box lunches can be pre-purchased when registering for the event online, or participants can bring their own picnic lunch.

Cycle-Thon and 5k Fun Run/Walk is also looking for support. Organizations and individuals have the opportunity to support the college’s mission of forging pathways to college for high school students, according to Hoy.

“In order to make this a successful event for the SCOPE program, we are asking for donations,” said Hoy. “Organizations and individuals can donate items or provide financial support. For example, a group or individual can have their name on the back of the event t-shirt for as little as $25.”
