Preparations in Full Swing for Cycle-Thon

Cycle-Thon is coming April 17, 2010, with proceeds to benefit the SCOPE program in the College of Education.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Cyclists, walkers, and runners have a great opportunity coming soon to enjoy the outdoors while helping to jump-start future careers in education. Suitable for all ages and abilities, the College of Education’s Fifth Annual Cycle-Thon and Fun Run/Walk will be held Saturday, April 17, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Sunset Park.
Proceeds from Cycle-Thon benefit the Summer College Opportunity Program in Education (SCOPE). SCOPE is a four-week initiative for rising high school juniors in historically underrepresented groups who are interested in a career in teaching, counseling, special education, rehabilitation, or educational administration. The program addresses areas including academic and study skills, admission criteria/application processes, financial aid, leadership, community service, cultural-affirmation, and career and personal development through a nurturing environment.

Cycle-Thon helps pay for the students' tuition and room and board at University Park.

The event features a 13½-mile bike ride and a 5K walk and run. All routes start and finish at Sunset Park on McKee Street in State College.

After the ride and 5K Fun Run/Walk, there will be a picnic in the Sunset Park pavilion with free activities for the whole family. Bring a lunch or pre-purchase one from Honeybaked Ham, and enjoy Bob Swaim's amazing (and curious) array of bicycles, which will be on display! The Nittany Lion will be there, too!

Registration is $25 for adults/non-students, $20 for college students, and $15 for K-12 students. Children five and younger are free. Registration begins in February and includes the ride or 5K, an official Cycle-Thon 2010 T-shirt, and all activities.

Sponsoring the T-shirt is another way to get involved. For a minimum of only $25.00 (more is always appreciated!), an individual, group, or organization can have their name on the official 2010 Cycle-Thon T-shirt.
