United Way Committee Reports on a Successful Campaign

The College's efforts to raise funds for the United Way campaign total $13,476.97.

By Pamela Batson (March 2008)

Penn State and the College of Education have a strong tradition of supporting the Centre County United Way (CCUW). Workplace giving such as payroll deductions is at the heart of the CCUW’s fundraising effort. The College of Education is proud to report that to date our continuous giving total from employee payroll deductions is $12,317.04.

To add to this total, the College’s United Way committee organized special events last year. The committee collected $1,159.93 through the sale of candy and snacks, pies from The Pie Shoppe, cookbooks, donations, the College’s kick-off breakfast, and a Silent Auction at Spats Cafe. This brings the College’s giving total as of this publication to $13,476.97.

Each spring, CCUW distributes funds from their fundraising campaign to agencies and programs throughout Centre County that provide health and human services. This all-volunteer organization also works with community partners to identify needed services, recruit and train volunteers, and serve as a referral service for those seeking services.

The College’s committee consists of seven members who decide on fundraising activities and report back to the University’s steering committee. After two years of dedicated service, David Cochrane will be stepping down as co-chair of the College’s committee. Melanie Hall will step in and co-chair the committee with Janell Howe.

If you are interested in volunteering in any of these upcoming events or if you would like to participate as a member on the committee, please contact Janell Howe, juh6@psu.edu.
