The camp offers a chance for reluctant readers and those who are experiencing challenges to develop their literacy. The camp features a low student-to-teacher ratio, with teachers who are enrolled in the capstone experience for Reading Specialist certification. Students learn word-solving and comprehension strategies while involved in large-group, small-group, and independent activities based on their interests and needs.

Past reading camp activities included constructing museum exhibits, preparing a readers theater performance, writing and publishing personal magazines, and individual research projects.

The College of Education’s goals for the reading camp experience include supporting children in their literacy learning while involving them in a community of readers and writers, providing opportunities for them to be successful.

Registration is $50. For more information or to register for camp, contact Kathleen Shannon, 814-865-2184 or kds12@psu.edu.
