THE INSTITUTE FOR COMPUTATIONAL AND DATA SCIENCES

New seed grant program designed to provide faculty and research groups with added support related to computational research, data science, or cyber infrastructure needs. 

Faculty members from all Penn State campuses are encouraged to apply by Nov. 20 by submitting a brief proposal.

The program will pair researchers with experts from ICDS’s Research Innovations with Scientists and Engineers (RISE) team. The RISE team has deep knowledge of various scientific domains as well as broad knowledge of research cyberinfrastructure. They specialize in:

  • Databases
  • Visualization
  • Code optimization
  • Application development
  • Science gateways
  • Cloud computing
  • Cyberinfrastructure development
  • Other skillsets needed for research in computational and data sciences

Reducing Social Disparities
Proposals sought for pilot research projects aiming at reducing social disparities. This RFP is motivated by evidence of increasing inequities in health and health care, education and employment opportunities, poverty ad economic well-being, exposure to adverse environments and other domains of life.

Application Priority:

  • Propose novel research, including high-risk, high-reward and transformative, proof-of-concept projects that assemble or generate preliminary data necessary for external funding; 
  • Develop collaborations involving interdisciplinary teams of junior and senior faculty.

Timeline:
  • Call for Proposals:  November 3, 2020
  • Proposals Due:  January 18, 2021 (by 5 pm)
  • Decisions Announced:  February 15, 2021
