A Different Model
Earn a post-baccalaureate in 15 months
The Teacher-in-Residence (TIR) program at Penn State employs an asset-based approach to teacher preparation that emphasizes pedagogical knowledge as well as social and cultural competence.
Why this program?
Teacher residency represents an alternative pathway to teaching for aspiring educators who already hold a bachelor’s degree.
•••
It is affordable and highly accessible to all teacher populations.
•••
It adopts a hybrid model that will allow candidates to take courses online and fulfill their internship and supervision as they work in the classroom.
•••
Residents will serve as the teacher of record in their classrooms.
•••
Residents can receive stipends and tuition support as they complete their training. In return school partners often require a commitment to continue teaching after the residency ends.
•••
Residents will learn from and work with Penn State professors, their host schools’ teachers/mentors, and the community in which they serve.
Students interested in the program will apply as a post-baccalaureate student. For more information about the application process and where to submit materials, please visit the Graduate School.
“We get requests for nontraditional routes to certification; some of these individuals are looking to shift careers, while others are finishing their undergraduate degree in another major but have had recent experiences that have ignited a passion for teaching.“
