Biography

Dr. Badiali is an associate professor of education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at The Pennsylvania State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Penn State in 1985.  He served as an assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction from 1985 until 1987. From 1990 to 1992, he coordinated the Office of Staff Development and School Improvement in the College of Education, an outreach arm of the Dean's Office. In 1992, Dr. Badiali became an associate professor and chair of the Department of Education Leadership at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio where he served for twelve years before returning to Penn State in 2004. He was named a Danforth-Johnson Scholar in problem-based learning at Stanford University and a Leadership Associate with the Institute for Educational Inquiry at the University of Washington where he is currently affiliated as an AED Scholar. Dr. Badiali was chosen as the recipient of the 2003 Excellence in Education Award, the highest honor bestowed upon an alumnus of the College of Education at Penn State and is sponsored by the College of Education Alumni Society. Dr. Badiali has worked closely with the College's Elementary Professional Development School as supervisor and Coordinator. Professional Development Schools (PDS) are unique laboratories of practice where teacher candidates can have authentic clinical experiences.  Within PDS communities, educators have the opportunity for continuous inquiry into the complexities of teaching, learning and schooling. His research involves every facet of the dynamic environment that school/university partnerships create.  It is based on the notion that the complexities of teaching and learning cannot be uncovered piecemeal nor in sites apart from actual practice.

Dr. Badiali's main teaching and research activities have been in the areas of school/university relationships, staff development, school reform, supervision, and curriculum. He has consulted with numerous colleges and universities throughout the United States as well as more than 100 school districts in the US and abroad. He has published articles in numerous educational journals including Education, American Secondary Education, the Peabody Journal of Education and School University Partnerships. He co-authored (with Anne Whitney), Writing as teacher leadership. (English Leadership Quarterly, October 2010, pp. 2-3.) which received Best Article of the Year Award in 2010 from the National Council of Teachers of English.  His last co-authored book is entitled Teacher Leader, 2001.
