Counselor Education Services
The mission of Counselor Education services at The Herr Clinic is to engage in strengths-based counseling services to promote mental health and wellness for the Penn State Community and the broader community. The Herr Clinic provides such services through the doctoral and master’s level students in the Counselor Education program.
The Counselor Education program at The Herr Clinic maintains two primary goals: a) to provide quality individual and group counseling experiences to Penn State students enrolled at University Park and non-students, and b) to provide excellent supervised clinical training to both counselor education master's and doctoral students. We provide unlimited counseling sessions for clients and charge no fee for services for Penn State students. Additionally, we utilize advanced assessment, recording, and documentation technologies.
It is important to note that The Herr Clinic is not a crisis center due to its limited hours. Should you have a crisis situation, please call the 24/7 crisis line at Center for Community Resources at 1-800-643-5432 or use their 24/7 walk-in crisis services at 2100 East College Ave., State College. In the event of an emergency, you can also call 911 or go to the Emergency Room at Mount Nittany Medical Center.
Clinic Information
The Herr Clinic counseling services are offered during the Fall and Spring semesters, Monday through Thursday, 10am - 8 pm. Counseling services are not available during the summer and any official university closings, including Fall, Winter, and Spring breaks, holidays, and inclement weather.
During normal operating hours, appointments are available in person and via telehealth.
College of Education students can request counseling services by emailing [email protected] or calling (814) 863-0048. The first step before receiving services is completing a brief (about 10 minutes) phone screening to ensure that counseling at The Herr Clinic will be a good fit. Because this is a training clinic, it is not the most appropriate resource for students who are in crisis. If you are emailing, please provide some days and times that you are available for a phone screening.
Penn State students can also be referred from the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). More information about CAPS can be found at Student Affairs Counseling and Psychology Services.
If you have received counseling services at the Herr Clinic in the past, please contact the Herr Clinic supervisors by calling (814) 863-2418 or emailing [email protected]. If you need to cancel or reschedule an existing appointment, please contact your counselor via email or contact the Herr Clinic supervisors. For members of the community seeking services, please contact the Herr Clinic supervisors by phone or email.

To request the Herr Clinic and its counselors at your event, please complete the following request form.
- The Herr Clinic employs doctoral graduate assistants to assist with the operations and management of the clinic. This essential GA role allows for advanced experience in running a mental health clinic, crisis assessment, data collection, student clinical training, outreach, program development and evaluation, and much more. Doctoral graduate assistants in the clinic work closely with Dr. Nadermann and have multiple opportunities to engage in research, conference presentations, and program development.
- The Herr Clinic provides a robust opportunity for counselors in training to get experience working with college aged students with a variety of presenting concerns, as well as experience with advanced technology and feedback informed treatment.
- Master's students spend their first semester learning counseling skills and Herr Clinic procedures. Master's students see clients in the Herr Clinic in the spring of their first year. This typically involves seeing 5 clients for weekly individual counseling as well as group counseling. Master's students can apply and interview to continue their internship experience at the Herr Clinic in their second year. Additionally, for an internship, The Herr Clinic has a wide range of partnerships that counselors-in-training can be involved with across Penn State (e.g., Student Disability Resources, The Office of Educational Equity, the Office of Education and Social Equity, R/VOICE, and more) and across the community (e.g., school districts).
