Biography

Dr. Sarah Shrewsbury-Braxton (Dr. SB) is an Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at Penn State. She earned her Ph.D. in Counselor Education from The Ohio State University, her M.S. in School Counseling, Pre-K – 12, from Tennessee State University, and her B.S. in Psychology and B.A. in Art from Southeast Missouri State University.

 

Dr. SB spent over a decade in the field as a professional school counselor in a variety of school settings (rural/urban/suburban). She has experience teaching K-12 students, preservice undergraduate students in teacher education programs, and master’s and doctoral students in counselor education programs.

 

Her research focuses on the culture of Whiteness in counseling and educational spaces, critical consciousness development, racial identity development, anti-racist school counseling, and liberatory practices within the profession. Dr. SB utilizes primarily qualitative methods of inquiry that center a critical lens.

 

As an active member in the profession, Dr. SB presents on her evolving research interests and works as a member of Counselors for Social Justice and the anti-racist working group for the School Counselor Interest Network.
